Kreatopita – A Feast Wrapped in Pastry
Why is this dish so healthy? Kreatopita is a great source of energy. By using lean ground beef, it provides high-quality iron, zinc, and vitamin B12. Combined with fresh herbs and premium olive oil, it offers a balanced meal that keeps you full without feeling heavy.
What makes this dish so special? Unlike meat pies from other cultures, the Greek Kreatopita excels through the lightness of its phyllo pastry. The meat is often seasoned with cinnamon and allspice, giving the filling a deep, warm aroma. A touch of cheese binds everything together for a juicy, rich texture.
Who is this dish suitable for?
Meat Lovers: Looking for a sophisticated alternative to grilled meat.
Families: A perfect lunch that is usually a big hit with children.
Hosts: Great for preparing in advance and serving as a centerpiece.
The Recipe: Kreatopita
Ingredients:
500g ground beef (or a beef and lamb mix)
1 pack of Phyllo dough
1 large onion, finely diced
2 eggs
150g Exarchos Goat Cheese (or Feta), crumbled
1 tsp cinnamon, ½ tsp allspice, salt & pepper
A splash of red wine (optional)
Fresh parsley, finely chopped
Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Repa Mediterran
Instructions:
Filling: Sauté onions in olive oil until translucent. Add meat and brown until crumbly. Season with cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Deglaze with red wine if desired. Remove from heat and let cool.
Once lukewarm, stir in eggs, crumbled cheese, and parsley.
Layering: Grease a pan. Brush half of the phyllo sheets individually with olive oil and layer them in the pan.
Spread the meat filling evenly over the dough.
Cover with the remaining (also oiled) sheets. Score the top surface lightly.
Baking: Bake at 180°C (350°F) for about 45 minutes until golden brown.
Zero-Waste Tip: Use any leftover meat filling as a base for a quick Bolognese sauce or to stuff bell peppers the next day. Any leftover phyllo scraps can be sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar and baked as a sweet "mini-snack."
